Definition: This common occupational Polish surname is a variant form of the name Karczmarz, which comes from karczmarz, meaning "innkeeper."

Borne by some of the most notable contributors to the making of modern Poland.  Including such men as technician Jan Kaczmarek who has published numerous works and the Olympic official zbigniew Kaczmarek, the surname Kaczmarek is said to be of two origins.  Firstly the surname derives from the Polish word “karcam”, meaning “inn” or “Hostel”.  Both terms may be defined as a public lodging house serving food or drink to travelers.  During the middle ages, the inn served as an important meeting place where the townspeople would gather and discuss daily events.  Prior to the inception of a structured system of surnames, a man’s occupation served as a convenient means of identification.  It is therefore possible to imagine the initial bearer as someone who operated an establishment such as an inn or hostel and adopted as his surname which described his trade.  The surname Kaczmarek thus means “son or descendant of the innkeeper”.  Alternatively, the surname is of toponymic origin, deriving from the place name where the progenitor resided or held land.  In this case, the surname derives from the place name Kaczmarek which is found in Poland.  The town of Kaczmarek is located in the Kujawy district near Sandomiers, which is situated on the Vistula River, approximately fifty miles southwest of Kielce.  The surname Kaczmarek thus also means “one who hailed from Kaczmarek”.  Slavic tribes inhabited areas of the Vistula River basin as early as 2000 B.C.  These tribes migrated in many directions, eventually forming groups that were referred to as the Eastern, Western, and Southern Slavs.  Variants of the surname Kaczmarek included Krecsmari, Krrma, Kretschmar, and Krcmarik.  References to the surname Kaczmarek or to its variants include the listing of one Johann Heinrich Kretchmar, who became a Bohemian Knight in 1720.

TrevorM Says:

There is a really great song about Archibald Gardner called the “the escape of Archibald Gardner” Written by Sam Payne.

It is on a CD called the Ghosts of Gardner Village. It is a well-written song and a cool story. Music as good as this is a rarity in Mormon circles.

Wives of Archibald Gardner

This blog has been created to document a few set of
statistical facts concerning the wives of Archibald
Gardner. His first wife was Margaret Calinder, a Scot
like himself. A brief review of the life of Archibald
Gardner can be found on:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archibald_Gardner.

A summary of the lives of the wives, as related to the
life of Archibald Gardner, is found in Delilah Hughes'
book. Abstracts of the book have been placed in email
format for Gardner family members only. Contact:

milorgardner@yahoo.com

and confirm your Gardner descendant status. Your family's
appropriate abstracts may then be emailed within 30 days.

Archibald married two statistical classifications of
plural wives. The first class includes the ones that
had been previously married. The second class include
the ones that had not been previously married.

In summary, the first class (five wives) consisted of
Abigail Sprague, Elizabeth Lewis, Serena Evenson,
Harriet Armitage and Mary Larson. Elizabeth and Harriet
returned to their first husbands, one reason being that
the husbands had been miners and were living alone for a
few years. Abigail, Serena and Mary Larson remained with
Archibald the rest of their lives.

In 1990, the descendants of Serena and Archibald
accounted for 50% of Archibald's descendants, 5,000
out of a total of 10,000 counted at the Afton reunion.

The second statistical class (five wives) consisted of
Mary Ann Bradford, Jane Park, Althea Thompson, Jane
Hamiltion, and Elizabeth Dowding. Jane Hamilton and
Eliabeth D. moved away or married other men. Mary
Ann, Jane Park, and Althea remained with Archibald
the rest of their lives.

A. Archibald Gardner is written up on Wikipedia, as
documented by several internet links.

7. Notes for Serena Evenson.

Serena was Archibald's 6th plural wife. Serena's
first husband Henrick Evensen was 2nd person to
join the LDS Church in Norway, Serena was the first
woman to become a member in Norway with Henrick and
Serena being baptized on 25 Jun 1852, and rebaptized
10 days before marrying Archibald. Serena's children
included twins, Serena and Serenus(Sy). The twins
were delivered by Aunt Venus, an African-American
mid-wife. Venus, was a well known and well respected
personality in Utah (additional census notes on Venus
are footnoted below). Serena thought of Venus highly
for several reasons, one being that Serena's mother
had supported her struggling family in Norway working
as a mid-wife, after the death of Serena's father.

*delivered by Venus Redd, a mid-wife, who served the Spanish
Fork area in several capacities. Concerning Venus's statistics,
she appeared in the 1850 census as Venus Redd, age 40. Her
sister Chaney Redd, also a mid-wife (or Chancey Redd) age 38,
female, both black, Luke age 19, Marinda 18, Sam 17, Anna 14
(their children -- recorded as yellow, meaning mixed heritage
in the census?), Benjamin Redd was from Tennessee, and no
state of origin was listed for Venus, Chaney, and children,
though Venus and Chaney had been baptized (LDS?) in
1843, while in Tennessee by B. Lee.

In the 1860 census, Luke Redd, age 34, farmer, from North
Carolina
, Venus Redd 47, (D. meaning ditto NC?), and Miranda
Redd 25 (D?. meaning also from NC?) were recorded.

None of the above ,Venus, et al, appeared in the 1870 census.
No cemetery for Venus, Chaney and their children/nephews
burial have been found (so far).

Interesting tidbits

I recently read Life of Archibald Gardner: Pioneer, and here are some things that I learned:
- Archibald was born in Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, Scotland on 2 Sep 1814.
- He imigrated to Canada while still a young man with his Mother. His father had gone previously.
- While in Brooke Township, Ontario, he married Margaret Livingston also born in Scotland, and they began their familiy.
- Archibald was baptized into the LDS faith in April of 1945. Due to persecution, he had to leave almost immidiately, heading to Nauvoo, Illinois. Much of the rest of the Gardner/Livington families also joined the LDS church.
- Once in Nauvoo, Archibald had to move his family to the Salt Lake Valley nearly immidiately. He became a "Captain of 10" on the treck westward.
- When Archie and "Peg," (Margaret) got their first view of the Salt Lake Valley, he asked his wife how she liked it. She sat down and cried.
- Archibald made building and running mills his occupation throughout his life, both in Canada and in Utah and Wyoming. He built over 30 mills during the course of his life.
- Plural marriage, or polygamy, was a difficult doctrine for Archibald and Margaret to embrace. Before the two of them came to terms with it, it nearly broke up their marriage.

My Scottish Gardners

My Gardners can be traced back to Robert Gardner and Janet Blair, both born in the 1690's in Renfrewshire, Scotland. Their great-grandson, Archibald Gardner, imigrated from Scotland to Canada to the US in the early 1800's. This page is to display, share, and gather more information about these Scottish and American Gardners. Obviously, the page is in the beginning stages - check back from time to time, I don't intend to let it stay this way!

Be advised that this is all information that I was given, not that I researched myself. Aunt Gladys has exhaustive source citations, but I got this information before I knew how important that sort of thing is. I didn't keep any of it. I'm working on getting the source information again, but for now all I really know is that there ARE sources for this. In additon to the information that I have here, I have some more off-line that I'd be happy to share if you're interested.

Archibald Gardner was born September 2, 1814, in Kilsythe, Stirling, Scotland, the sixth child of Robert Gardner and Margaret Calinder. He immigrated to Canada with his mother, following his father, in 1822 and settled in Dalhousie with his family. In 1835 he followed his brother William to Warwick, where he farmed and built two grist (flour) mills and a saw mill. He married Margaret Livingston February 19, 1839 (12 children: Robert, Neil, Archibald, Janet, Fanny, Margaret, Sarah, Mary Ellen, Abbie, Rachel Maria, Delila, and Carrie Andrus (adopted)). He first heard the restored gospel in March 1845 and was baptized the following month. The extended Gardner family traveled to Nauvoo, arriving after the Saints had left the city, then moved on to Winter Quarters. In June 1847 Archibald and his family left for the Salt Lake Valley in Bishop Edward Hunter's company, Archibald serving as a captain of ten (including the families of his brothers William and Robert and others from Warwick). They arrived in Salt Lake City September 29.

The following year Archie and Robert constructed a saw mill and a grist mill on Mill Creek. In 1849 Archibald married Abigail Sprague Bradford (widow of Hial Bradford, whose five children became part of the Gardner household) and her daughter Mary Ann (one child: Mary Elizabeth). In 1850 Archie and Robert built a saw mill and in 1853 a grist mill on the Jordan River. In 1858, in the face of the threat of the Utah War Archibald's family, consisting of nine wives, fifteen children, seven step-children and an adopted Indian girl (Fanny), moved to Spanish Fork. Archibald left behind a homestead at Mill Creek, the mills in the canyon above, a grist mill and carding machine on the Big Cottonwood stream, a grist mill and saw mill on the Jordan River, and the "big hay field" of about 1,000 acres in the river bottoms in the southern end of Salt Lake Valley. Archie began to build a large home for his family in Spanish Fork.

The following spring President Brigham Young sent word for Archibald to come to Salt Lake City to be ordained bishop of the West Jordan Ward, which occurred in March or April of 1859. He served in the territorial legislature from 1878-1882. In 1886 he spent several months in Mexico to escape the federal marshals, who were on the trail of polygamists. In 1889 he moved to Star Valley, Wyoming, to escape the persecution. From this time his family were spread across three locations, Spanish Fork, West Jordan, and Afton, Wyoming. In May of 1891 he was released as bishop of the West Jordan Ward, having served for 32 years. Archibald Gardner died February 8, 1902, in West Jordan.

A funeral for Martina Varner, 89, a six-year Carson City resident, will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Valley Memorial Park in Novato, Calif. Burial will follow the service in the park's Garden of Devotion. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Mrs. Varner died Oct. 28, 2006, in Carson City. She was born Feb. 4, 1917, in Salt Lake City, to George and Elizabeth Orsel Huber.

She graduated from West High School in Salt Lake City in 1935, and attended nursing school in San Francisco.

She had worked on Liberty ships at the Marin Shipyards during World War II as a welder and as a waitress and cook. She later purchased a restaurant. She worked for Cottage Hospital in San Rafael, Calif.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City. She enjoyed knitting, painting and gambling.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carrol T. Varner in 1985; by daughter Beverly Austin; brothers Emil, Burt, George, John, Albert and Floyd Huber; and by sisters Lucille, May and Kobina.

Among her survivors are her sons Carrol Varner of Carson City and Bob Varner of Pope Valley, Calif.; daughters Jacqueline Varner of Novato, Calif., Shirley White of Petaluma, Calif., and Pamela Byers of Novato; sisters Leone Hill of Salt Lake City, Leah Simpson of Kentucky and Darlene Norton of Jacksonville, Fla.; 25 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Martina Varner, 87, of Carson City, hit a $319,202 MegaJackpot at the Carson Nugget on Wednesday night on a quarter progressive machine after playing just $40.

A regular at the Nugget, Varner was on her way to eat dinner when Lady Luck struck.

"I was shocked and couldn't believe I won," said the stunned Varner.

The local retiree has no plans as of yet for how she will spend her winnings, but said it would not change her life in any special way.

Fortune smiles on Carson City retiree

Carson City's Martina Varner should have no problem buying a vowel any time soon. Or much of anything else, for that matter.

The oversized novelty check with the Wheel of Fortune logo on display on her family's dining room table will see to that.

The 87-year-old great-grandmother of 47 and great-great-grandmother to two quietly fed $40 of her $150 stash into a quarter progressive Wheel of Fortune slot machine on Wednesday night at the Carson Nugget.

Almost immediately, Varner nailed the MegaJackpot for $319,202.78.

Not too surprising for a woman who spent World War II toiling in the shipyards and earning her the nickname "Rosie the Riviter" from her adoring family. She may move a bit slower these days, but she still has the manual dexterity of a concert pianist.

It was the first time the popular quarter progressive had been hit at the Nugget.

While the news spread almost immediately to her vast extended family through a complicated tree of e-mails, it took a while for Varner herself to realize exactly what had happened.

With all of the noise and the feedback from her hearing aids, she thought somebody else had won. The crowd that gathered around her quickly brought her up to speed.

"I usually go play on Tuesday," grieved the retired Marin County nurse, relaxing in the sunken living room of her son Carroll and daughter-in-law Josephine's stone modernist home in Jacks Valley.

Her face, already bright, betrays a sly smile, her eyes shining freely behind her glasses.

"She was upset because we couldn't take her to the casino on her usual day," laughs her son, playing along in disbelief.

Apparently, Martina got over the affront to her gambling schedule pretty quickly. As she likes to say, "It was just one of those things."

One of those things that seem to happen to her quite a lot. Like the time she took the Hyatt for $2,000. Or the time she walked out of Harrah's with more than $4,000. Or the time one of her grandchildren won a brand-new Mercedes Benz playing the slots.

Though planning on purchasing a new, more MegaJackpot-friendly set of hearing aids, she hasn't thought of anything else to spend her winnings on just yet. She went for her usual hair appointment on Friday and looks forward to her next trip to the Nugget. One day at a time.

"As long as I'm good," she says, conspiratorially, "they'll take me next Tuesday."

Martina Varner, center, enjoys a moment on Friday with her son Carroll Varner, left, and daughter-in-law Josephine while talking about Martina Varner's good fortune at the Carson Nugget. Brad Horn Nevada Appeal

I am a volunteer at the museum in Durango, Colorado. I found George and Gertie Varner in Lake City, Hinsdale County, Colorado in the 1900 census. Living basically next to them are George's parents - Harmon and Mary Varner. George says he was born April 1876 in Iowa to a father from Ohio and a mother from Iowa. Harmon Varner was born 1842 Ohio and Mary 1854 Iowa. Living with Harmon and mary is their grown daughter Ceolo.

1. Gertie and George had been married less than a year when the 1900 census was taken, so it is more likely she was pregnant with their first child at the time.

2. Gertrude could well have been adopted, but most adoption records are sealed. I can think of one possibility - that Martha Reed Clark, a widow, married Jacob Campion who adopted her. Gertie was born in Iowa to parents from Illinois - I can look to see if Jacob was from Illinois.

3. The government did keep records of Indians on a yearly basis. But we would need to know Gertie's birth name to find her. Gertie very specifically lists herself as "white", so it will be very difficult if not impossible to tell unless yo ucan find a photo of her.

One final note - whoever posted the Varner family tree on Ancestry.com did a very good job. You should look at it. If you do not have a subscription, most libraries can get you there free. I will also try to contact the owner of that tree (they did not post any contact info) to see what they know.

Gertie was born Jan 1884 in Colorado to parents fromIllinois. She and George married 1899. They list no children in 1900.

A previous post has identified Gertrude's parents as Martha Reed Clark Camplain(so she seems to have been married twice)
and Jacob Cornelius Camplain.

All the Varners identify themselves as white and american citizens.

One final note for today, unless I hear from the owner of the Varner family tree. Jacob was born 1832 in Pennsylvania, not Illinois. He married Martha Oct 1866 (or 68) in Independednce Missouri. Their "daughter" Alberta Gertrude Camplain was not born until Jan 21, 1885. It would be very unlikely for a couple back then to have their first child after almost 20 years of marriage. So that would lend credence to the adoption story.
kathyszelag@frontier.net

A further update. This is from the Varner family tree on Ancestry.com . Your branch of the Varner tree has been traced back to Holland in 1765 with a man named Martin Varner. his son Leonard (1801-1869) came to the US and married a Matilda Russell (1807-1858). Their son Leonard Harmon Varner married Mary Ellen Fulmer, and their son was George Harmon Varner, husband of Gertrude. See pervious post. George was born April 19, 1896 in Iowa

A little more info. I am leaning toward Gertie being the biological child of Jacob and mattie - she had older brothers and sisters. First I need to correct one point in my pprevious post - Gertie said she was born in COLORADO 1885 (not Iowa.) She did say, however , that her parents were from Illinois. While Jacob was not BORN in Illinois, he did live there for quie a while, and in fact served in the Union Army from Illinoi 1862-1865. Wife Martha (Mattie) Reed was indeed born in Illinois. They were married 1866 in Missouri, shortly after the Civil War ended. By 1885, Jacob and family were living in Montrose, COLORADO (not too far from Durango), where he was a carpenter. They had 4 children at that point (and Mattie was only 32 years old, so certainly young enough to have children.) They were :
Arthur (16 in 1885), Estella (11), Guy (5) and Alberta Gertrude (1 1/2).

GALA DAY AT VINCO

Friends Made Mrs. Byers' Birthday a Memorable One.

Vinco, July 2. -- Wednesday, June 29, 1904, was the fifty-seventh birthday anniversary of Esther, the wife of the genial B. F. Byers. The occasion was made a cunningly arranged surprise, gotten up by the family, and over sixty-five of her neighbors and friends in a crowd walked in and took full possession of the home. Mrs. Byers was the recipient of many presents, which she appreciates highly. In a short time a long table was arranged in the shady orchard, which very soon was made to groan beneath the weight of such things as are very palatable. Prof. Varner, with his talent and taste for instrumental and vocal harmony, was there, and in all his glory led off in music, part of the day in rehearsals of things of gone-by days. Toward evening all went home happy.

The following were present from Vinco: B. F. Byers and wife, the Rev. G. H. Jones, wife and son, P. F. Custer and wife, Henry Varner and wife, George C. Varner and wife, Daniel Burkhart and wife, Emanuel Clinefelter and wife; Mrs. Amos Wagner, Mrs. F. H. Grove, Mrs. Wlaxander Garland, Mrs. D. W. Brallier, Mrs. Mart Kerr; Misses Maggie Wagner, Emma Simmons, Grace Simmons, Mollie Baker, Mollie Kerr, Mollie Donehoe, Daily Kerr, Mary E. Burkhart, Cora Long, Pearl Byers, Ida Byers, Myrtle Machall, Eva Warner, Jennie Garland, Bessie Horner, Edith Hamer, Elsie Wagner, Alice Clinefelter; Messrs. Norman Byers, George Byers, Joseph Byers, Howard Byers, John Byers, Lester Machall, Harry Garland, Millard Machall, Angus Varner, Clayton Machall, Sherman Machall, and G. L. Varner, of Conemaugh: Samuel Byers and wife, Zachariah Varner and wife, Mrs. William Killen and child, John Killen, Robert Colbert, Coney Berty and David Killen, of South Fork: Elmer E. Reynolds and wife, Miss Clara Paul, of Pittsburgh; and Mrs. Annie O'Keefe of Johnstown. Stanley Custer.

Arthur E (Edward?) Camplain – 1869-1939

The information below is from the Kamplain family tree on ancestry.com, census records from 1880 through 1930 and his obituary (as well as that of his wife) in  the Grand junction Daily Sentinel. The family name was originally spelled Kamplain and was a very old (1700s) family in Pennsylvania.

He was born in Indian Territory in 1869, although thru various census records he says that was Kansas, Oklahoma and Colorado. All three were “territories’ at the time. His mother was Martha Ellen Clark (family) or Martha Ellen Reed (family tree.) Father was Jacob C Camplain. Martha and Jacob married in Missouri in 1868. By 1880 the family was living in Pueblo, Colorado. By 1885 they have moved to Montrose, where both Martha and Jacob are still alive. Arthur is single, living with them and a day laborer.

The Kamplain family tree shows 6 children to Martha and Jacob – in chronological order they were Lucenda, Arthur, Estella/Stell, Guy/Guffie, Maude and Triffla. (Triffla may have later changed her name to Violet, since Arthur’s obit names a surviving sister named Violet who was born the same year as Triffla. Violet married Herber Colvin and is buried in Durango._

Civil War pension records show that Jacob died Dec 10, 1896 in Montrose. Martha applied for and received a pension. Civil War service records show that he enlisted in 1862 in the Illinois 155th infantry and served until the end of the war in 1865. He was mustered out in Tennessee. The unit saw a great deal of battle, including at Chickamauga.

By 1900, Martha is widowed and living with Arthur and other children in Silverton, Colorado. Arthur is still single and again a laborer. Martha’s son Guffie died Oct 11, 1900 and is buried in Hillside Cemetery, Silverton. Martha died March 11, 1901 (age 49) and is buried with him.

By 1920 Arthur has moved south to La Plata County, Colorado. In June he is still single and rooming with an Elizabeth Hautman. But his obituary says that that year he married Elizabeth in Durango (I have not yet found the marriage certificate.) The Elizabeth Hautman listed in the census was 13 years older than him. The Elizabeth he married was 13 years older than him, so I think they are one in the same. It would also appear from a later census that this was her second marriage and his first. I believe the children listed in her obituary may have been from her first marriage. He is a carpenter building bridges. His obit would later say that in fact he had worked in concrete construction for most of his life. In 1920 he and Elizabeth are still in Durango.

In 1921, they moved to Grand Junction, Colorado. He is still working as a laborer there in 1930.

She died first – April 1939 at their home at 429 Pitkin Avenue. Survivors  included her husband, and daughters Blanch Brown of Durango and Hattie Wetmore of Beaver Creek.

He died later that year  in October. His obit says her maiden name was Hartley (so Hautman would have been the name of her first husband.) His obit does not list any surviving children so that would again lead me to believe the two daughters were by her first marriage.

Both are buried at Orchard Mesa Cemetery in Grand Junction.
